Integrating Multi-Disciplinary Expertise in a
LEarning and Adaptive European Pandemic Preparedness System (LEAPS)
LEAPS emerged in response to the urgent need for improved pandemic preparedness highlighted by recent global health crises.
In the wake of recent global health emergencies, the need for an advanced state of preparedness against pandemics has never been more evident. The devastating impacts of the 2014 Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic have underscored the critical need for rapid research, countermeasure (CM) developments, and equitable access to these lifesaving interventions. Genomic surveillance has emerged as a cornerstone for effective pathogen monitoring, yet its scalability remains hindered by logistical and financial challenges, particularly in regions most vulnerable to disease emergence.
LEAPS is a beacon of innovation and collaboration
crafted in response to these urgent challenges. Our mission is to integrate genomic surveillance within a comprehensive, interconnected system and develop new methods for pandemic preparedness and response.
In partnership with the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA), LEAPS is poised to lead in the battle against COVID-19 and future pandemics by enhancing diagnostics, expediting the development of vaccines and medicines, and informing decisive action for rapid, efficient, and effective pandemic response within the European Union.
The goal of LEAPS
is to demonstrate the value and feasibility of a proactive policy supporting the strategy for EU-based genomic health surveillance and emergency preparedness/response by delivering a system-wide stakeholder-validated proof of concept against pathogen X.
Impact and innovation
LEAPS aims to be at the forefront of preventing and responding to pandemic threats through cutting-edge research, strategic partnerships, and community-driven solutions.
LEAPS is committed to setting new standards in pandemic prevention and response. Through groundbreaking research, strategic alliances, and community-focused initiatives, we aim to transform the global landscape of pandemic preparedness.
Partners
The LEAPS Consortium unites top experts in biomedical sciences, social sciences, and humanities from across Europe to enhance pandemic preparedness through collaborative research and innovation.
Our structured approach includes 9 Work Packages (WPs) focusing on genomic surveillance, epidemiological modelling, threat assessment, countermeasure development, policy recommendations, and ethical compliance.
