Akhil Kumar Srivastav

Akhil Kumar Srivastav is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Access-To-Medicines Research Centre of the KU Leuven. He is a mathematical modeler by training, with a Master (M.Phil) and a PhD degree in Mathematical Epidemiology from the School of Advanced Sciences at Vellore Institute of Technology, India. Throughout his academic career, he has published 30 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals and has presented his findings at several international scientific meetings, delivering talks and poster presentations.
The focus of his work is the development of conceptual and mathematical systems models that support policymakers and stakeholders in transitioning toward more sustainable and resilient socio-economic systems, particularly those related to human health (the interconnectedness of human, animal, and ecosystem health). His key application areas include pandemic preparedness, health systems for the prevention and control of infectious and chronic diseases, and system design for medical innovation.
During His M.Phil research project “Mathematical Modeling of Influenza”, he developed a deterministic modeling framework aimed at understanding the dynamics of influenza viruses, incorporating optimal control strategies such as reducing transmission rate between human to human and increasing treatment rate of symptomatic cases.
For His Ph.D. project, “Mathematical Modeling of Mosquito-Borne Diseases”, he expanded his research focus to study vector-borne diseases such as Zika, dengue fever, and malaria. He also include investigations into COVID-19 dynamics. During his PhD, he spent 6 months in Shanxi University China and a model for Zika virus disease was developed using complex networks.
In July 2021, he was incorporated as a Research Technician at the Mathematical and Theoretical Research (MTB) Group at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) in Bilbao, Spain financed by the Basque Modeling Task Force (BMTF) project.
In 2022, he was awarded the Juan de la Cierva (JdlC) Fellowship by the Spanish government for a postdoctoral position. January 2023-December 2024, He had been part of the MTB group as a JldC postdoctoral fellow, where he worked on deterministic and stochastic dynamical systems theory applied to epidemiology. He also spent some time at ISGlobal, Spain as postdoctoral Fellow before joining KU Leuven.
Besides the modeling development and analysis, he is also involved in group seminars, courses and scientific events organization.
